When people say they aren’t sure about getting a cat, their number one reason is usually the same: they don’t want their home to smell like a litter tray.
But I’ve got some great news for anyone who wants to enjoy the wonderful company of a cat at home without having to scoop litter and battle smells multiple times a day.
During one of my visits, I came across a brilliant piece of tech: the electric, self-cleaning litter box. It automatically shifts the litter just 7 minutes after the cat has used it, dropping any clumps into a tightly sealed drawer underneath. It locks in the smells so well that you won’t notice a thing, and it can last up to 5 days before it needs emptying. I won’t name any specific brands here because I’m not selling them — I just genuinely love how these things work!
The one I tested stops instantly if a cat touches it while it’s moving, making it completely safe. Plus, it connects to a smartphone app that tracks your cat’s weight and tells you exactly how many times and when they visited their “bathroom” during the day.
First, the waste drawer uses specific liners. You have to fit them carefully according to the manual, making sure the edges don’t get trapped or pinched.
The second issue is something I experienced just two weeks ago while looking after a cat here in East Grinstead.
I had finished the evening feed and gone home when I got an urgent message from the owner. Their app had sent an alert saying the litter box was full. When this happens, the machine stops self-cleaning until the drawer is emptied. The owner was completely puzzled because they had put a brand-new liner in just that morning.
I rushed straight back to the house — it was nearly midnight by then! When I arrived and opened it up, I found the drawer was actually almost empty.
What had happened was that a single “package” had dropped in such a way that it trapped a pocket of air under the liner, puffing it up. The sensor misread this as a full drawer.
The moral of the story? It’s definitely worth taking a little time to learn how these smart gadgets work. Once you do, they completely transform the comfort of living with a cat, and your furry friend will love always stepping into freshly cleaned litter.
The app itself is incredibly smart too, letting you keep an eye on your cat’s health by showing how long they spent in the litter box and tracking any changes in their weight.
There are plenty of videos online comparing the different models and brands out there.

I just thought this was worth a quick post to show how you can keep your home beautifully fresh and your cats (and pawrents!) completely happy.
